
When he was 27, he enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark and graduated in 1995. He was also a part of The Killing, a drama series that was released around the world. He was later featured in Those Who Kill II and Borgen III, two other highly acclaimed Danish dramas. He also had an important part in Sherlock which is the BBC drama where his character was Charles Augustus Magnussen, whose blackmailer. In the American TV series House of Cards, his character was the president of Russia. He won an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his part in Danish television drama Herrens Veje, which was broadcast in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm. Mikkelsen can speak fluent English, Swedish, German and Danish in addition to his mother tongue. He also has picked up different accents. Mikkelsen has stated that he and his brother learned English initially by listening to Monty Python recordings and watching comedy sketches.
